Welcome to Gallery Chuma in historic downtown Charleston South Carolina. We specialize in the art of the Gullah people of coastal South Carolina as visually portrayed by internationally recognized masters and innovative select group of emerging artists.
We are a resource center to learn more about the Gullah Culture through Gullah Art, Gullah Books, Gullah Crafts, Gullah Storytelling, Gullah Spirituals, Gullah Tours and Gullah Food.
The Gullah people are descendents of enslaved Africans who settled on isolated sea islands and marshland areas from Jacksonville, Fla., to Wilmington, N.C., in the 19th century. They live in small farming and fishing communities along the Atlantic coastal plain and on the chain of Sea Islands which runs parallel to the coast. Because of their geographical isolation and strong community life, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of African Americans. They speak a Creole language similar to Sierra Leone Krio, use African names, tell African folktales, make African-style handicrafts such as baskets and carved walking sticks, and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. Today, various factors threaten Gullah communities, including developers seeking land to build resorts and condominiums along with younger generations leaving ancestral Gullah lands for college or employment and not returning.
Gullah Art is a recognized art genre, much like Native American Indian Art. Gullah Art by Indigenous Gullah artists are more than just aesthetics, it is a desire by these artists to preserve their culture and lifestyle that is under attack on many fronts
Award winning artist Jonathan Green is considered one of the most important painters of the Southern experience and is certainly one of the most preeminent artists capturing the traditions of African American culture. Jonathan Green, one of South Carolina's treasures, is a professional artist whose work over the past twenty years has been exhibited at major national and international venues and has appeared in numerous fine art and literary publications.

10/01/06Live Jazz music and Fine arts, featuring Charleston’s finest vocalist Ann Caldwell along with her ensemble “LooseFitt Band” at Gallery Chuma for some cool, relaxing jazz tunes, with friends, great food and wine.
Listen as Ann Caldwell interprets the emotions, rhythms, spirituals and experiences encountered in the Gullah paintings through her musical improvisations.
Complimentary wine and Hors d’oeuvres provided for each performance in a party atmosphere.

Jones has become famous for his paintings of images of slavery he discovered engraved on Confederate Money. His nationally acclaimed traveling exhibition: The Color of Money is currently on display in Columbus, Ohio, and is scheduled to travel to museums across the country through 2011.
His popular exhibition has broken museum attendance records and have been critiqued and described in articles in over 410 publications, including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Post and Courier, The Chicago Tribune and Time Magazine. Jones' paintings also have been featured on CNN, PBS and National Public Radio. His paintings are in the collection of several museums and important private collections.
Jones explores life through art. Striving for detail in light and reflection, he meticulously draws each painting first, and then layers it with color, resulting in very realistic interpretations of everyday life and landscapes, as well as historical insights into our past. His ability to transform his vision of the world into thought-provoking and beautiful works of art, has earned him many commissions and honors.
Jones has lectured widely as an artist, activist and motivational speaker at various universities and colleges, conferences and corporate events.
